Gerda Smith

Garden Route mixed media artist Gerda Smith has been honing her skills for the past several years. Charcoal is a much favoured first choice in her art practice. Everything she creates starts with a drawing in charcoal. Inspiration comes mainly from nature. She finds herself gravitating towards trees. They symbolise strength: stability and groundedness, with branches reaching towards the sky, like arms.

Another interest of hers is the human face.

“A portrait takes one on a journey into a person’s private world”

In the Key of Light
