Janet Dixon is a child of the Karoo, a self-taught artist and medical doctor. She was privileged to be mentored by accomplished and diverse artists in the Klein Karoo, chiefly Thijs Nel, Francois Tiran and Ina Marx.
She was the instigator of the Artists of Oudtshoorn co-operative in 2005, opened ArtKaroo Gallery in 2007, which ran in a public space for 10 years with frequent curated exhibitions. At present, ArtKaroo gallery operates online and with pop ups. She has continued to stay involved in the art scene in the Southern Cape: exhibiting mainly at the Oudtshoorn Art Gallery, curating group exhibitions for the Klassique and the KKNK, exhibiting at local galleries in the Garden Route, Prince Albert, Graaff-Reinet, Ladismith, Riebeek Kasteel and with Scava.
Finding endless inspiration in nature and the nature of people, Janet embodies figurative symbolism in her art, spanning nature studies, portraits and landscapes. She utilises oil, acrylics, pastels or her current chosen medium: alcohol inks.

I am in awe of the array colours the Klein Karoo puts out, perfectly arranged. Blue skies, hemmed with soft violet and dusty blue of the Swartberg, offset by the browns and olives of the veldt, the orange of plakkies or pink of the klapperbos popping in joyfully. I hear the veldt orchestra playing a movement giocoso. Dark accentuates the play of light as it does in music, a little light goes a long way -piano, piano.
And in the mornings when I walk in my garden, the dew still on the aloe leaves… I hear Cat Stevens!
