Constance Jonkers

Constance is a Klein Karoo based artist, with a background in sculpture and photography at Michaelis School of Fine Arts (UCT). Her current works include acrylic paintings on canvas, and are inspired by fragments of nature, wildlife, as well as faith-based elements. She utilizes an abstract-expressionist language to communicate scenes and visuals that may awaken familiarity within the viewer.

In the Key of Light

“World” a soundscape created through atmosphere. The abstract cityscape tells a contrasting story of evolving chaos that is hidden beneath a blanket of stillness. The strong use of the colour black highlights the idea that when nights are darker, it is harder to conceal hints of light that squeeze through, and the stars are more appreciated. How the crystal-clear night skies of the Klein Karoo provide a tranquil silence that completely changes by daytime. The work expresses music through atmosphere, a slow tempo from above with a crescendo of activity rising from below.
